"I tried to play dumb, but that wasn't working. Hey, I said, don't look at me. We're talking about them. Them. If it was up to me, I wouldn't change a thing. You're fine with me the way you are. But we're not alone, are we? We live in a world of them, like it or not.
That's where I tried to keep it, on them. I didn't mention myself. I didn't say do it for me. I didn't say that if you don't change you can forget about me. I never said that."
Choose ONE of the following questions to answer for your comment this week:
1. Do you think it's right that Leo pins his comments about Stargirl on "them"? Do you think he's being honest? Why or why not?
2. Do you agree that "we live in a world of them"? Do you think as many people fall into the "them" category as Leo thinks? Why or why not?
3. Why do you think Leo cares so much about what "everybody" thinks? How would you behave similarly/differently in his position?

3. I think that Leo cares about what everyone thinks so much because he's always been used to trying to fit in. Leo has always been used to being like everyone else, and it's killing him to be an outsider. I'm not completely sure how I'd behave in Leo's position. In some ways I'd act the same; others, I wouldn't. Truthfully, I can't say I know what way I'd act because I've never been in that position before. However, I do think that if I WAS in that position, I would stick with Stargirl because I would know that she was my true friend, and I could be myself around her. With everyone else, I would be, as Leo puts it, one of "them" and not an individual. To me, I'd rather be an individual with good friends than one of the crowd.
ReplyDeletei think Leo cares so much about everyone else's opinion becuase thats just how their town is. Stargirl was the most different person from everyone else there so, no one knew how to react. Leo claims that he loves Stargirl so much so if he does he should be able to forget what eveyone else thinks and just stay with stargirl!
ReplyDelete3.
ReplyDeleteI think that Leo cares a lot about what everyone else thinks because he doesn't want to be different. He just wants to be normal, but no one can be normal. To everyone in the world, normal is different. I agree with 11is.a.balla:) because if he really did love her, he wouldn't notice everyone else. He wouldn't care about other people besides Stargirl and himself.
I would have just let Stargirl(aka Susan)be herself. That way she can express herself the way she wants to. Since Susan changed herself, she isn't the same girl she was. She is "normal" according to Leo. If Leo loved Susan he would have just let her be herself and not told her to change to be "normal".
But, if I was ever in Leo's position, I would have stayed with Stargirl because the other kids would just have to deal with it. If that would happen, I know that my friends would stick by me and wouldn't care what anyone else thought about me.
1. I honestly think that Leo really cares about what everyone else thinks way too much. If he didn't care so much, he wouldn't mind Stargirl being different. And he wouldn't mind being shunned as much as he does now. I think that the whole "them" excuse is just a way of saying what he really thinks. But I think that he really does like Stargirl a lot, he just needs to quit caring so much about other people's opinions.
ReplyDeleteI dont think it exctly right of Leo to pin it on everyone because some of those thoughts were his as well. I also dont think he is being very honest as well because if he really liked here he would keep her the way she is but since she was too different he wanted her to change.
ReplyDelete3. I think he cares so much about what everyone thinks is because he wants to fit in, not be the "odd one out", and have everybody like him. If I were to be in that position I wouldn't care what everyone thinks about me,I would stay with stargirl and be myself around her and everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI am responding to question 3. I think he cares about what everyone thinks because he is afraid of being the different one. He is worried about what the other people will think if he is not like them. Every day he watches Stargirl and sees how she is ignored, he is worried this will happen to him. I think if I was in Leo's position I would cherish her differences because those differences separate her from the others.
ReplyDelete1. From what I've hear about this Leo (since I haven't heard the whole story), he seems to be what I call a "follower". If the whole group doesn't like something, he'll go along with it. If they like oranges, he'd like oranges. In my opinion, I don't think this is right. What if a person doesn't like oranges? The group would signal them out and cause them to feel different? That's not right! If Leo goes with what everyone thinks, he wouldn't have any individuality.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Leo is being honest either. If he really liked Stargirl, he'd like her no matter what anyone thinks about her. I believe he uses "them" because he really doesn't know that what Stargirl does bothers him. He thinks it's what "everyone" thinks, but I believe it's really what he thinks. Leo should just be himself.
3. Leo likes Stargirl/Susan, but to be honest he just wants to fit in like all of the other Mica High School students. I might behave similarly and can actually relate to the situation because I have a friend (his name I will not say) that hasn't been thoroughly "modernized" to what the world thinks. So Leo & Stargirl's situation is not new to me in reality.
ReplyDelete3. I think Leo cares so much about what everyone thinks because he just wants to fit in and be like everyone else. I think he's more interested in being like someone else to fit it instead of being who he wants to be. I would probably in that situation just let her be herself and not try to get her to be who she's not. I would just like her for who she is.
ReplyDelete3. Leo cares so much of what other people think because he wants to fit in with his friends and others. If i was Leo i would just exept stargirl the way she is, becaue you cant change people.

ReplyDeleteWhy do you think Leo cares so much about what "everybody" thinks? How would you behave similarly/differently in his position?
ReplyDeleteI think he cares so much because he doesnt want a bunch of kids to make fun of him for liking star girl. If she's the same as everyone else no one will make fun of him. I think that I would feel the same way because I hate when you like someone and everyone's like "EW" or "gross" but if you do truely like them you wouldn't care what people would think.
I think stargirl should go back to normal because things aren't same with out her being her self. I also think that Leo is just trying to fit in with everyone else in the school
ReplyDeleteA few additional questions with some of the new stuff we've read:
ReplyDelete1. What do you think of Leo's reaction to "Susan"? I'm surprised at how ready he is to accept her changing herself.
2. Do you think the Mica students will ever accept "Susan" or do you think it's too late?
i think leo cares way ot much about what everyone thinks. he should just ignore them, it would make everything easier...
ReplyDeleteI think that Leo just cares about Stargirl and it hurts him when people make fun of her even if she says she doesn't care. I think that Leo should stop caring what people think and should be more like Stargirl. Then the world would be a happier place and they would all live happily ever after because people would stop making fun of them and they would start being nice to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great comments, everyone!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry for my actions for my post before. I was a disgrace and should be ashamed of myself. I am such a dunce. She is not pitiful, I am pitiful. But I really do not like the way Stargirl is acting. I did not mean any harm to Stargirl, it was just the way i felt about her. I so sorry, Sousan (aka Stargirl).
ReplyDeleteI think Leo needs to lighten up. Stargirl isn't the problem, he is. He needs to deal with it and stop complaining.
ReplyDeleteLeo cares so much about everyone because he is not Stargirl.
ReplyDeleteI think that we do live in a world of "them," because we are always judged and stereotyped and put into where we fit socially, no matter how adequate or inadequate that place happens to be. "They" probably refers to anyone who you don't personally know, and who don't know you that well, either.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, i totaly think that we live in a world of "them". The Junior High student body tends to be like on giant living organism, and if you're not a part of that organism, then you are an outcast. But, the test we face is: do we care? Should it matter whether or not we are "shunned"? Of course it shouldnt. And yet to all of us, on one level or another, it does. None of us want to be excluded. Ever. So yes, we live in a world of "them". But we should always (at least try to) be ourselves! :)
